Important Travel Planning Information

  • As a general rule your passport should be valid at least 6 months AFTER your return from Iceland, although different airlines and countries may have different rules. Utilize only the official government website for passport applications, renewals, and updates

  • The name used to book your travel must match what is on your passport EXACTLY. Differences may result in costs to update, loss of booked components, and denied flight boarding and hotel checkin

  • Travelers to Iceland must abide by the rules of the Schengen Area, of which Iceland is a part

  • Check the weather prior to departure so you can pack appropriately for your travel and plan to layer

  • ETIAS is scheduled to launch in Q4 2026. Visit the official website for further information and updates

Travel insurance is highly recommended!

Booking Flights from the US to Iceland

  • Ensure your passport is valid at least 6 months after your return date

  • Book your airfare with the EXACT name that is on your passport

  • Book using a major, reputable airline - avoid third party booking engines

  • Book directly on the airline’s website

  • Prioritize nonstop flights, or one layover maximum

  • Remember that due to flight duration and time change, you will arrive the day after you depart from the US

  • Plan to sleep on your flight from the US to Europe so you wake up rested and are more likely to avoid jet lag

  • If necessary, invest in upgraded seats, noise cancelling headphones, and anything else that will assist you in falling asleep and staying asleep on your flight to Italy

  • If you check luggage, invest in apple airtags or a similar GPS tracker to locate your luggage in case it gets lost

  • If you check luggage, be aware that you will need to recheck it when you go through customs (for example, flying from ORD Chicago to CDG Paris, and from CDG Paris to FCO Rome, you will need to recheck your luggage in Paris)

  • Consider investing in Global Entry to utilize expedited customs lines upon your return to the US
